What a Wonderful World

While sitting in the teacher’s cafeteria Friday, nibbling happily on my meatloaf and mashed potatoes, a conversation at one end of the table caught my ear.  One of the language arts teachers was relating an event in her classroom that warmed her heart.  Apparently, she showed one of her classes a short video of her son wrestling another boy at a meet.  Near the end of the video, one of the children asked, “which one is your son?”

Now, this is no big deal. Kids ask questions like that all the time.  I gave you a black and white synopsis of the event though.  Let me paint the picture for you. Read more…

There are a lot of things wrong in the African American Community…

Let me rephrase that… there are a lot of things wrong in the BLACK community.  Deep seated, painful, demoralizing things.  Books have been written on the topic as a whole and in its various parts.  Poverty, poor education, economic disadvantages, all sorts of differences that none of us have control over; you name it, we got it.

Being a “dark girl” is one that hits me hard, very hard.  If you don’t know what being a dark girl entails, check out this movie preview…

I’m a dark girl.  quite dark;  BEAUTIFULLY so.  I didn’t always think so though.  It was hard growing up in a household with a dark skinned father and a caramel skinned mother.  My caramel skinned mother was considered “dark” in her family… and that, I do believe was damaging to her. She talked about how she only wanted ‘white” people doing work in the house and how “black” people were shiftless and lazy as if she wasn’t part of the race. Read more…
